Aloha Spirit: James D. Houston & the Music of Hawai’i

Director: Geoffrey Dunn

2011, U.S.A., 11 min.

This documentary provides an endearing exploration of the late writer’s relationship with the culture of Hawai’i, in particular its music, and his friendship and collaboration with Hawai’ian ukulele virtuoso and filmmaker Eddie Kamae. Featuring interviews with his wife Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and his eldest daughter Cori Houston, the film also incorporates some previously unreleased interviews with Houston himself by the Kitchen Sisters (Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson) along with some never-before-seen family photographs. Short and sweet, the film is a loving tribute to Houston’s lifelong love affair with Hawai’i, crafted by his friend Geoffrey Dunn.
