This documentary brings to light the unsung heroism of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Formed in 1942 from “nissei” (second generation) Japanese from internment camps and officers discharged from the U.S. Army subsequent to Pearl Harbor, the 442nd fought not only America’s enemies abroad but also fought against America’s prejudice at home. Packed with memoirs, historical footage, live interviews and recordings of veteran’s visits to European locations where they fought, this film not only brings to light a little-known page in history, it also shines a strong light on racism and racial profiling. Members of the 442nd volunteered to fight to prove their loyalty as patriotic Americans, which defined their identity. Often chosen for the most dangerous missions because they were considered “expendable,” the 442nd became one of the most decorated regiments in the history of the U.S. military.
