Patagonia Rising

Patagonia Rising

Director: Brian Lilla

2010, U.S.A., 88 min.

With incredibly beautiful cinematography, Patagonia Rising investigates a plan to build five large hydroelectric dams on two of Chile’s wildest and purest rivers: the Baker and the Pascua. Fed by vast glacial systems, these free-flowing watersheds drive biodiversity in temperate rain forests, estuaries and marine ecosystems throughout the Patagonian region. They are also the life source for the areas most tenacious residents, the gauchos. The nation is divided and debate about the proposal rages. Through a series of interviews, complex and academic issues are given human faces. Juxtaposing the pro-dam business sector with renewable energy experts, the documentary brings awareness and possible solutions to the global conflict over water and power.
