All About Dad

(USA, 2009, 90 minutes, English & Vietnamese, English subtitles)

Director: Mark Tran

In this debut feature film from Northern California filmmaker Mark Tran, ALL ABOUT DAD is the classic conflict between an "Old World" father and his "New World" kids. However, Tran brings us a new perspective as this film focuses on Vietnamese Americans. The story follows a Vietnamese American family with a loving but strict dad whose rigid expectations threaten to thwart his children's ambitions. His son Ty is a college student who refuses to be the "model minority" that his Dad wants him to be, while daughter Lihn has kept her finance's Buddhism a secret, fearing rejection from her fiercely Catholic father.  This film takes us on their journey with humor and compassion, as they navigate the crossroads of cultures and generations.

Film director and screenwriter Mark Tran will be here in person, along with actor Chi Pham, who plays "dad". There will be after-film Q&A moderated by Dr. Drew Todd, Lecturer at San Jose State in the Department of Television, Radio, Film and Theater.
