Although ethnically Tibetan, the remote Himalayan Kingdom of Mustang (“Moose-tahng”) is part of Nepal. Isolated by geography and politics, Mustang’s people were impoverished, its 15th-century monasteries collapsing, its Buddhist wall paintings disintegrating. In 1991 Nepal opened this area known as The Forbidden Kingdom to the outside world, in an attempt to save the art, people and culture of this area. Narrated by Richard Gere, the film features interviews with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Raja of Mustang, and chief art conservator Luigi Fieni. Mustang tells the story of a Tibetan Buddhist culture pulled back from the brink of extinction through restoration of its sacred sites. This 30-minute documentary is stunning and fascinating – and will leave you wanting more.
