Old Partner

(2008, South Korea, 78 min., Korean w/ES)
Director: Chung-Ryoul Lee

From first-time director Chung-Ryoul Lee, this simple, poignant story of a humble 80-year-old farmer, his wife and their 40-year-old ox broke box office records for independent films in Korea. An eloquent documentary about love and loyalty, Old Partner beautifully depicts the sacrifice, perseverance and rhythms of farming – and of marriage. The connection between humans and nature, and the cycle of life in the Korean countryside, vividly unfold with minimal dialogue. The film was originally titled “Wonangsori,” meaning “The Sound of a Cow Bell,” which appropriately dominates the soundtrack. Old Partner is a uniquely charming love story.
