Director: Tadashi Nakamura
This poignant documentary tells the history of the Asian American Movement of the 1960s and 1970s through the life experiences of activist-singer Chris Iijima. The film starts with Iijima’s youthful activism as a performer at political rallies, traces his career in public education in New York and ends with his work at the University of Hawaii. His story recapitulates the experience of a generation of young Asian Americans seeking rights for their families and themselves. The music sings the birth of a movement. Filmmaker Tad Nakamura is a fourth generation Japanese American who earned an M.A. in Social Documentation from UC Santa Cruz and a B.A. in Asian American Studies from UCLA. He was born and raised in Los Angeles.
